Hibiscus Cutting To Literati Bonsai: Progress Report

Share
Okay, here is another hibiscus bonsai in the making. The dream is to train this hibiscus cutting into a literati bonsai. And although it may seem like a long road for this tree, its development in the past months is already surprising me.
At an early age of fewer than 6 months, this little hibiscus cutting has been growing vigorously as if it’s telling me that it badly needs a haircut.

To be honest, I don’t exactly understand why the leaves are looking like cheese holes. I am suspecting that hungry inspect, perhaps some kind of worm, is responsible for this. But that is okay because as I see it, this one is still so alive and healthy. Thanks to my amazing soil mix.

When I learned that this cutting is established already, I immediately wired it add character and look how it outgrew the wire in less than 2 months.

The tree was a boring stick with and straight trunk. I did some basic bends to left. And now, it shows some noticeable character.

It it’s time to get some haircut.

It was a hard decision to make but I finally took the scissors. I cut the old main branch. This branch will now be the new leader.

The goal is to train this tree into literati style bonsai. And by now I can already see that this tree will not make it hard for me to achieve that goal.

More updates on this tree soon. Stay tuned!
