Defoliating and Initial Wiring of Tugas

In this “My Bonsai Journey” post, I will be discussing my tugas tree which has grown and now requires defoliating and initial wiring. It is important to apply wires to the selected branches while they are still soft. This allows the bonsai artist to get better control of the branches and bend them according to his artistic perspective.

This is one of the yamadori Vitex parviflora (Tugas) that I featured in my previous unboxing post “Unboxing Shohin Tugas Yamadori Materials from Linta Bonsai of Mindanao”

My Tugas Bonsai Growth

It’s been growing on this plastic container for more than 3 months and I am happy to see that the growth has been very consistent. I think it is because of the soil mix that I used in planting them which is basically a mixture of mostly organic but well-draining materials.

I must apologize to Sir Ogi because even though I featured his soil mix in my old post “Pinoy Bonsai 101: Soil Mix” I still used my own soil mix which is mainly made of carbonized rice hull, river sand, and decomposed rice hull… equal parts. More about this mix in my future posts.

Anyway, the main guy in this video is this Tugas:

My tugas bonsai has gone a long way. I actually had a hard time recognizing it from how it looked when it was first planted.

It is now time to do some initial work on this tree. In this video, I will defoliate and select some branches. I will also put some wires on the selected branches in order to guide them in the desired direction while still young.

I am not really good at taking videos so I apologize for the shaky camera. lol

Enjoy!
