With the abundance of trees and natural resources almost anywhere in the country, many Pinoys find it easy to get into the wonderful hobby of Bonsai cultivation. But that is just one of the many reasons why Filipinos are kind of addicted to training trees to become artfully dwarfed. In a post I have made on a popular Bonsai Hobbyists’’ group on Facebook, I asked a question that goes like this:
“Why did you choose this hobby considering that it takes a lot of time, patience, and sometimes money to grow a good looking dwarfed tree?”
(By the way, it is a question that a demotivated bonsai artist like me would ask… ha-ha)
After a few minutes, active members of the group eagerly replied to air their various opinions about the hobby and why they chose it. Their pieces of stories and point of views carried me away and one would think that the hobby is indeed worthy of all the patience, and effort.
So Why Bonsai for a hobby?  Here are the glaring reasons of the energetic members of the Bonsai Hobbyists of the Philippines:

It teaches your patience really and molds you to become a well-rounded person…. – Saguittarius

It simply teaches me how to deal with frustration, – Chevid

It shows your creativity, lots of patience and incredible rewards just by looking at them when you wakes up in the morning!! – Jocelyn

Sa akin kasi… Pangtanggal stress. Para ka lng naglalaro, di ka napapagod, parang unlimited walang katapusang enjoyment… Hehehe lalo na kung maghunting akyat dito bunot doon di mu mamalayan malayo na narating mu…  (For me, it’s a stress reliever.  You’re like playing, not tiring, unlimited enjoyment, especially when you hunt tree materials.) – Rolan

At first curiosity ang reason kung bakit ko pinasok to, akala ko ganon ganon lang ang gumawa ng bonsai, Mali pala ako, aside from magastos e talagang nasubok yung pasensya ko dito, nandon kasi yung maputulan ka ng sanga habang nagaaral ka mag wire and etc… Parang naging hamon na saken tong hobby na to, sabi nga nila inip talo… As a newbie e masaya ako na makita yung puno ko na Hindi man kasing ganda ng mga post ng masters pero alam ko naman in time gaganda rin sila… Patience is a virtue ika nga nila (At first, it was because of curiosity.  I thought it was easy to create bonsai, I was wrong.  Aside from being costly, it also tested my patience because there will be times when a branch would break while learning to wire and etc.  This hobby has become a challenge for me.  As a newbie, I am happy that my trees, although not as good looking as the masters’ creations, I know they will be soon.   As they say, patience is a virtue.) – Mark Mann

As for me, it is simply a hobby. – Crescencio

Art and nature combined – Wen

(For me, this is one of the hardest form of art.  It is unlike other art that you can set aside once finished, this one goes on for a life time because you have to take care of it until the next generation.  As it grows old it becomes more beautiful.  It also relives stress.  When you are tired from work, just look at them and it eases you.) – Ronie

yun ang mystery doon eh, yung extreme affection and connection mo sa art of bonsai na hindi mo maipaliwanag kung bakit, ang alam mo lng it provides you satisfaction and ease heheheeheh…. nature boys (That’s the mystery there, your extreme affection and connection to the art of bonsai that you cannot explain.  All you know is that it provides you satisfaction and ease) – Jacob
