Huge Crape Myrtle or Melendres Bonsai Progression
My father helped me in collecting this neglected Crape Myrtle or Melendres that has been planted in our neighbor’s front yard for many years. It is approximately 30 years old. It was collected last July 13, 2016.
It is kind of huge. More than 10 feet tall. Surely taller than me.
I thought it’d be a good material for a twin trunk bonsai. After cutting the irrelevant branches, here’s how it looked like.
I was wanting to keep the height of the tree and experiment on a twin trunk that also showcases a literati feature. This will also allow me to keep the unique branch movement on the tree’s top part.
Having to cut a tree this big give a lot of opportunity to propagate through cuttings. So I decided to collect all those straight cuttings and thought that a forest style is a good idea for them.
Going back to the big Crape Myrtle, it has been planted and put in an alternative or improvised greenhouse by covering the entire tree with plastic. The humidity and moisture within the plastic should speed up it’s growth.
